Independence Day (1996)

Bekkah:

The only other time I remember seeing this movie I was very high and I didn’t remember anything that happened. This time it was much better. Jeff is very dreamy except when he is drunk. But he, like all the other dudes in this movie make a lot of bad choices. Somehow this one passed the Bechdel test and has some good moments of surprising progressiveness. It was shockingly weird to watch a disaster movie with a kind of OK president handling a crisis right now. Something to aspire to? Jeff 2020!

Danya:

I first saw in theaters when I was in middle school, and I’m pretty sure I was on a “date” so all I remember about the experience was awkward preteen hormones. It does really improve on the second watch! While many things are implausible (we can’t even get our printers to reliably talk to our computers, but we could insert a computer virus easily into an alien ship?) the writing is sharp and the characters are compelling (shout out to Boomer, the intrepid golden retriever). The child actors are adorable and Bill Pullman really does make me yearn for a president with an ounce of integrity. Jeff is the nerd of my dreams. Unassuming genius apparently is my type.

7/10 Goldblums
