“Civil Forfeiture” (2014) Last Week Tonight w John Oliver S1E20

Bekkah:

While it is extremely weird watching something filmed in 2014 but referencing 2022 (the Olympics in Beijing), Last Week Tonight is such a good show that I almost never watch. I think I did actually watch the civil forfeiture segment back in 2014 and this was one of my introductions to ACAB and… well… ACAB. The system is broken and if you don’t know about civil forfeiture, which can be translated into “cops stealing your shit for no reason other than greed,” then you should probably watch this episode. John Oliver is hilarious and smart and telling stories we should all know! Plus bringing in Jeff (hot off his stint on Law & Order? timing is fuzzy) to harass a stack of one-dollar bills in an interrogation room is obviously a stroke of genius. Yes, I would like something from the vending machine.

Danya:

So oh my gosh, it is so trippy to watch a news program from 2014 coming up on year three of the pandemic. Like, what a different world! The biggest corruption was in police departments just taking people’s money cause they can, so simply and obviously corrupt. Unlike now, when newly elected congressmen can admit they lied about basically everything in their life and everyone shrugs. Anyway, Jeff is brilliant. The best part is that obviously they just let Jeff hang out in a room and taped him hilariously taunting a stack of cash. He will crumple you until you look like a cat’s asshole. Perfection.
