Vibes (1988)

Bekkah:

This movie is completely ridiculous and I loved pretty much every second of it. Jeff and Cyndi as weird psychics trying to solve mysteries? Garbage Eurotrash dudes messing everything up? Cyndi having way too many perfect outfits for camping in the Andes? Jeff doing the Jeff thing all the way back in the 80s? I am here for all of it. Why is Cyndi Lauper not in more movies?! She killed it and she was definitely having fun, as I understand is something she generally wants to do. I would watch this again and again!

Danya:

When I was a teenager, I wanted to be a parapsychologist and investigate psychic shit, so I feel pretty qualified to say that this movie is delightful. I know the critics hate it, but the witty and irreverent banter between a bubblegum sweet Cyndi and a nerdly prince Jeff did it for me. The violence (and there’s a lot of it!) was bumbly 80s, just the special effects. There’s a real underlying sweetness between them, despite the incipient sexism. If you want champagne this won’t do, but if you’re in the mood for a milkshake, you’re in luck.

Chris (guest review):

In a world containing any semblance of justice, Vibes would be regarded as a true camp cult classic of the 80s. In the real world, however, this movie holds a 3.x on imdb and a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. Vibes is a delightful movie featuring stellar comic performances by Cyndi Lauper and Jeff Goldblum, and perfectly captures my image of how psychics were perceived in the 80s, then melds that into an adventure comedy romp that knows exactly how absurd it is. Strongly recommend if you applaud general silliness — ignore the critics on this one.
