The Tall Guy (1989)

Bekkah:

Danya wanted to watch something better than Tenspeed and Brownshoe episodes this week, so we picked this. It was not better.

So am I supposed to feel bad for a tall American actor living in the UK? Is this what oppression looked like in the 80s? Was it really that hard? I mean, I guess??? Jeff is sadboi Dexter (which is both my favorite and least favorite name) who (spoilers) makes bad decisions all of the time. Is this what Jeff does in movies? He just makes bad decisions in deep Vs?? I mean, look, I am always here for a deep V and the fashions in this movie were AMAZE. But Jeff/Dex continues to make bad choices and treat his amazing gf Emma Thompson like trashhh. Points for sex positivity in this movie and also for Jeff having a woman roommate who was always banging like 2-4 dudes but never Jeff and that wasn’t a weird thing. Also, there were like 4 plotlines throughout this movie and I didn’t really care about any of them. Also, Jeff’s hair was TERRIBLE.

Danya:

You know who was in this movie? Emma Thompson. She was hilarious and strong and hundred times better than Jeff. This is the kind of movie where the guy has nothing to offer but the woman is cool and strong and badass and he is a lump of oatmeal. Not even good creamy oatmeal, but like day old crusty oat meal. I do not know why she was in love with him. Or why she took him back after he behaved like a psychopath. I guess I could blame the 80s? It’s like flirting with sex positivity but can’t let go of that sweet, sweet, toxic masculinity. Fuck Dexter and his stringy hair, too.
