The Big Chill (1983)

ALERT THIS IS WEEK 52 OF GOLDBLUMMY GOODNESS

oh god will it ever end.

Bekkah:

As a 30-something who drinks a lot of alcohol, I feel like this movie of 30-somethings(?) who gather for a long weekend of weird friendship after a friend’s funeral to reminisce and consume a lot of controlled substances was… strange? Like I really don’t know what happened here. Jeff was a super creep hitting on too many people. Glen Close had fabulous hair. Kevin Kline’s itty bitty shorts kept making appearances. I kind of like the dynamic of people dealing with friends who end up in different social classes (because that’s #real), but also I felt like most of them were selfish and weird? Or really bad at being adults? Or something? But the soundtrack to this movie was 10/10 Goldbooms and the aesthetic was *chef kiss* with all of the great 80s household stuff. Jeff in that weird robe? Yes, please.

Danya:

There are a lot of white men in this movie with similar haircuts, so for the first half the only one I could really identify was Jeff. I have the sense that this might have been a really good movie, with complicated character development and relationships, but as I didn’t know anyone’s name for 95% of the movie, the epic goodness I was promised eluded me. The 80s were a glorious aesthetic and Michigan seems like a nice place to spend the weekend. It does seem like there was a lot of love and genuine friendship between characters, which is soothing to see, especially now when it’s been a year since I’ve been with other humans and not felt awkward. Also, everything Bekkah said.

5/10 Goldbooms
