Thank God It’s Friday (1978)
Bekkah:
I wish I lived in a world where I could go to the Jeff Goldblum Disco with taxidermy and Donna Summer and DEEP Vs FOR DAYS. This movie was pretty bad, but also totally delightful. A bunch of weird white people having weird white people problems (bad dates, can’t see without glasses, shitty husbands, getting busted for fake IDs), while the Commodores (Black) roadie had to repeatedly prove how talented he was so the band could finally save the day (and the dance-off) at the end. Donna Summer also sings “Last Dance” with great fucking hair. Surprising moments of queer-positivity in a pretty sexist landscape. Most of the way through, I said to Danya, “Oh hey, it’s nice that Jeff is one of the less shitty dudes in this movie!” But I was wrong, y’all. He was still shitty. But very deep Vs, so I’m going to continue to allow it. TGIF!
Danya:
At first, I wondered if this movie was going to just be a long music video, but instead it was like a precursor to the 90s classic Can’t Hardly Wait. You follow a bunch of (mostly white) people having much more fun than you are having during a global pandemic. They all have quests for the night (I must win the dance contest! I must have an adventure! I must make out with a lady and not have her assault me!) Everyone wins in the end, except for poor Jeff Goldblum who is too charming to be of this world. The 70s don’t joke about a deep V. The Vs are as deep as Donna Summer’s hair is high, and for that, we should all be grateful.
