Raines (TV Show 2007) Episodes 1 & 2

Bekkah:

This show is fine? Based on the description, I was hoping for more of a Pushing Daisies situation and less of an imagination thing, so that was a little disappointing. But Jeff is still extremely charismatic while talking to deal people. I feel like this was an era (2007) when Jeff Goldblum was trying to be a Regular Human Actor and not a Charming Weirdo. They should have just let him be a Charming Weirdo. He is great when he’s weird and funny and strange. I can see why this show only lasted one season. It’s like… fine! I can get behind the monster-of-the-week (or whatever that is called in cop shows, oh btw, this is a cop show and Jeff is a cop) procedural thing. It’s classic for a reason. But this is no Law & Order (note: Jeff is in some episodes of L&I: Criminal Intent!). Anyway, I’m looking forward to the rest of the season, but also kind of glad we only have 5 more episodes.

Danya:

Jeff wasn’t quite as Jeffy as you would want. He’s got the brooding, and the moments of dark sarcasm, but none of the moments of absurdist joy. Maybe it’s because his hair is so normy? This show does aggrandize cops, and I just KNOW he’s going to sleep with his therapist (protip DON’T DO THAT), but also has some moments where it subverts stereotypes and is feminism-curious. Definitely not the worst way to spend a few hours, especially if you’re not sober. By the time we do this next week, Joe Biden will be president and hopefully everything will be just a little bit brighter, and at least, with less fascism.
