Life Aquatic (2004)

Bekkah:

I give this 9/10 Goldblums, but Danya didn’t like it as much even though SHE ALLEGEDLY LOVES QUIRKY THINGS! This has so many of them! Claymation sea critters! Portuguese David Bowie covers! Matching outfits! Willem Dafoe as a German who only wears shorts! Actual pirates! Harold from Harold and Maude! Can this get any quirkier?

Other things I love that are in this movie: the ocean (which I love even more than dinosaurs), Cate Blanchett, Angelica Huston, Campari, dramatic tension.

This is the second of two Goldblum Movies that make me cry. Never sorry.

Danya:

I do like things that are quirky! I love me a Royal Tennebaums, give me more Wes Anderson and magical sad things, that are visually arresting. But somehow this magic and this sadness just didn’t resonate. BUT SEA CREATURES YOU SAY. Yes, I know. I, too, love sea creatures. But alas, maybe because Bill Murray played a narcissist too well? In 2020, we could all use a little less meglomaniac in our lives. +5 for Jeff taking his shirt off.

8 / 10 Goldblums
