Hotel Artemis (2018)

Bekkah:

This movie was really good! We have seen a lot of Bad Movies and, I gotta admit, I definitely expected this to be a Bad Movie. But shit, this was a fucking great cast, with a solid (if too timely: presumably climate change induced riots) plot, beautiful set design, and, of course, Jeff being his weird-ass self, even for just a few minutes as a creepy billionaire villain. Solid ending in a complex movie. There was a lot of plot going on and I almost wish a few of the plot lines had been flushed out a little, but the movie felt whole and complete, so it really isn’t missing anything. This would be a great premise for a longer TV show, but hey. I really have only good things to say about this!

Danya:

I know this is weird, but this movie was art. The sets, the soundtrack, the subtleties, the tensions between characters. Really the sets themselves could be in museum. Or my non-existent summer home. Whichever comes first. Violence isn’t quite glorified, but it’s understood as necessary in the brutal world of capitalism when people are marching on the streets because they want clean water. In September 2020 with all the left side of the US literally on fire, it feels prescient but still managed to make me laugh. Jodie Foster is a gem. Women actually get dialogue and character development which is ::chef’s kiss::
