Hideaway (1995)

Bekkah:

I had to argue Danya up from 5 Goldblums for this one! OK, this is not an amazing movie, but Jeff is dreamy and there is a real plot! I feel like my standards have been lowered, but that is where we are right now. For some reason, I thought from the poster that Alicia Silverstone was Jeff’s love interest and I am PLEASED to report that she was his daughter instead, which is much more age appropriate. Also, his wife, whose name I have forgotten because I am writing this a week after watching the movie, was the TRUE HERO of the movie and she didn’t get enough credit. The graphics were probably super cutting edge for the 90s, but they were truly bad. Bonus points for this movie coming out a few months before Clueless, but there is a bit at the beginning where everyone is talking about Cher!

Danya:

During month 5 of the pandemic, I admit I don’t need to do anything that would ADD to my anxiety, so I was pretty trepidatious going in to this. Luckily this movie was not scary, which may have been due to the 90s graphics that did not age well. I am not afraid of a firey ball of screaming faces that represent the “devil.” Jeff did not wear glasses, but otherwise was pretty believable, especially because he did have his special 90s black leather sport coat. The mom gets short shrift and it’s fun to see Alicia pre-Clueless. Movie was definitely good enough, but I could do without the glorifying violence against women. Where’s my equal opportunity murderer? Why does it have to be weirdly sexual. Just kill people already.

6/10 Goldblums
