Beyond Therapy (1987)

Bekkah:

Wow this movie was bad. We were hoping for some fun #jeffsogay antics, but instead, we got some #ohnohomophobia, like constantly. For a movie centered around a bisexual man, holy shit. I mean, I know the masses were not fond of queer folks in the 80s, but fuuuuuck this was pretty gross. Also sexism up the wazoo. And inappropriate power dynamics. Jeff being SUPER creepy and kind of rapey? Bob was the true hero of this film (or at least the least unlikable character) and I hope he finds his happiness despite everything. +1 Goldblum for the mostly EXCELLENT costumes in this (great use of stripes!) except for Jeff’s weird oversized suit. Anyway, as we said on the main page, we watch these movies so you don’t have to.

Danya:

Oh, God. Why. Why? This movie had so much potential. Bisexual Jeff! Zany antics! Wacky therapists (a personal favorite of mine)! Instead it was poisoned by the homophobia and misogyny. It was based on a play, and according to wikipedia, the playwright said that this was an “unfortunate outcome.” It’s the worst outcome. Jeff’s outfits aren’t even enough to redeem. Everyone is deeply a bad person. It was aiming for a French sex farce and landed in a pile of sexist garbage. Should have been funnier, but just made me feel queasy. If I could vomit on this movie, I would.
